Following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, hundreds of thousands of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa immigrated to the new state. Many were housed tents and tin huts in transit camps, known as "ma'abarot." The transit camps were meant to be a temporary housing solution, but for many they became a long-term reality. This Hebrew-language documentary film (with English subtitles), "Ma'abarot," tells the story of those transit camps, their former residents, and the inequalities that existed between Ashkenazi and Mizrahi (Eastern) Jews in the young state, whose legacy continues in contemporary Israel.
