Summer Funding Opportunities for UVA Students and Faculty

The Jewish Studies Program is pleased to announce a number of research funding opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty for Summer 2021.

2021 Jules Roos and Samuel Grunfeld Fellowship for Israel Studies

The Roos/Grunfeld Award, made possible through the generosity of Aaron Nir and Daniel Nir of New York, normally supports summer research travel to Israel by UVA faculty and Ph.D. students in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. In light of the Covid-related travel restrictions, this year the terms of the Award have been amended to permit recipients to conduct remote Israel-related research. Award funds may be used for the purchase of digital scans from Israeli libraries and archives, purchase of books, hiring of local research assistants, and translation services.

The Award is primarily intended for summer research in Israel, but it may be used during the 2021-2022 academic year, subject to permission from the Director of Jewish Studies.  This year the Jules Roos and Samuel Grunfeld Fund will award two fellowships, one each in the amount of $2500 to a doctoral student and a faculty member.

Applications for the Award are being accepted now through May 12.

Criteria for the award include:

  1. Faculty and Ph.D. students in all departments and programs in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences are eligible for the Award.
  2. The research must be original, intellectually rigorous, and make a significant contribution to the study of Israel in one or more of a variety of academic disciplines, including but not limited to Israeli history, politics, society, demography, culture, religion, and language, including Yiddish.
  3. The research must contribute to scholarship that would reasonably be expected to lead to the publication and/or production of a scholarly or creative work (e.g. Ph.D. dissertation, scholarly book or article, film, musical score, or some other form of scholarly endeavor).
  4. Recipients of the award will be requested to provide a report with details of the work that was enabled by the award.

Applicants should submit a CV, a 1-2 page research proposal, and a budget. The proposal should explain why it is necessary to conduct the research in Israel, and the budget should indicate other funds received or funding applications in process as relevant. In addition, Ph.D. students should provide a brief letter of support from a faculty advisor.

2021 Undergraduate Summer Research Awards

The UVA Jewish Studies Program is pleased to announce summer 2021 research fellowship opportunities for UVA undergraduate students. In order to support independent research projects related to Jewish Studies, the Program intends to award up to 5 grants each in the amount of $200. These funds can be used for purchase of research materials, including books and other published materials; hiring of translators or other remote research aides; travel consistent with UVA guidelines to consult archives and libraries; and other pre-approved research expenses.

Applications for the Award are being accepted now through May 12.

Criteria for the award include:

  1. UVA undergraduate students in all departments and programs who will be enrolled in the College in the Fall of 2021
  2. The research project must be original, intellectually rigorous, and engage in a meaningful way with the academic field of Jewish Studies.
  3. Recipients of the award will be requested to provide a report with details of the work that was enabled by the award.

Applicants should submit a CV, a 1-page research proposal, and a budget. The proposal should explain how these funds will permit independent student research over the summer.

Faculty Summer Research Awards
