Curriculum Vitae

Asher D. Biemann is Professor of Religious Studies and Professor of History (by courtesy) at the University of Virginia, where he teaches modern Jewish thought and intellectual history. His research focuses on Jewish religious, intellectual, and cultural history. Rooted in Jewish and Continental philosophical traditions, his work frequently engages religious and aesthetic questions. He has been Martin Buber Visiting Professor at the Goethe University of Frankfurt, Forchheimer Visiting Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and has held teaching appointments at Harvard, the University of Vienna, and the Karl-Franzens University of Graz.

Among his publications are a critical edition of Martin Buber's Sprachphilosophische Schriften (2003), The Martin Buber Reader (2001), as well as Inventing New Beginnings: On the Idea of Renaissance in Modern Judaism (2009), Dreaming of Michelangelo: Jewish Variations on a Modern Theme (2012), and Michelangelo und die jüdische Moderne (2016). ​
